On Monday, Dhaka University unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) organized a silent procession in memory of Abrar Fahad, a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) who was beaten to death by Chhatra League leaders and activists in 2019.
The silent march started at noon from the central Shaheed Minar. It moved through several areas, including Doel Chattar, the anti-terror sculpture of Raju, and the Faculty of Social Sciences, before ending at the base of the Raju sculpture. After the march, the leaders and members of Chhatra Dal observed a one-minute silence in respect for Abrar.
This event was held to mark the fifth death anniversary of Abrar Fahad and to demand a democratic campus where students can practice free intellectual activities without fear. Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahoshs, president of Dhaka University Chhatra Dal, and Nahiduzzaman Shipon, the general secretary, along with other leaders, attended the event.
Abrar, a second-year student of BUET’s Electrical and Electronics Engineering department, was killed on October 6, 2019. He was allegedly called to a room and beaten to death by Chhatra League members on suspicion of opposing their activities.
Speaking after the event, Shipon said that the silent march was a tribute to Abrar’s sacrifice for the country and his dream of a new Bangladesh. Chhatra Dal also organized similar events across various universities and colleges nationwide to remember Abrar’s legacy.
