A woman suffering from burns died on early Thursday a week after her husband set her on fire in Jashore’s Abhaynagar upazila.
The deceased was identified as Hira Begum 25, wife of Billal Sardar of Garuhat area in Singari village of the upazila. The man has been absconding since the incident. Victim’s brother Yasin Sardar said Hira's husband Billal had been trying to take her to India since their marriage. As she refused to go, Billa often beat and tortured. On November, the man set her wife on fire pouring petrol.
Neighbors rescued her and took her to Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex. Later she was transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Hira suffers burns on her chest, back, and both hands, Dr Tumpa Kundu of the Health Complex said. Six days later, she was referred to Dhaka and succumbed to her injuries on way to Dhaka early Thursday.
Abhaynagar Police OC (Investigation) Milon Kumar Mandal confirmed the matter to the Bangladesh Post. A case has been filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. Police are trying to arrest the accused, the OC said.
