Jashore region farmers to harvest 16 lakh tonnes of Boro rice

70 pc harvesting completed so far

The farmers of six Jashore region districts are going to harvest about 16 lakh tones of Boro rice in the current season when the climate if the weather remains suitable. About 70 percent of the harvesting was completed so far, while the remaining portions will be harvested within the next 10 days.

Use of modern technology, equipment and quality seeds has been helping boost Boro production in the season, said the department of agriculture extension (DAE) regional office sources in Jashore. 

Farmer Asaduzzaman of Nityanandapur village of Shailkupa upazia in Jhenaidah when contacted said he had cultivated Boro on his three bighas of land in the current season. He received 31 maunds of paddy from his plots. The area was same in past season also. 

Farmer Badar Uddin of Satmail Bazer area in Jashore when contacted at the weekly market said he brought his three and a half of bigha land under Boro farming in the season. He had harvested 30 maunds of paddy from each bigha in an average. He had completed the harvesting from his 80 percent of plots in the meantime, Badar Uddin said.

According to DAE Jashore region office sources, the farmers of the region had brought a total of 367,961 hectares of land as against the DAE target for 353,780 hectares of land under Boro farming in the current season. The yield might be 4.4 tones on each hectare on an average.

District wise achievements in hectares was 157,880 hectares in Jashore, 80,284 hectares in Jhenaidah, 39,821 hectares in Magura, 35,130 hectares in Kushtia, 35,746 hectares Chuadanga and 19,100 hectares in Meherpur. The farmers in the region had produced 1536,162 tones of Boro rice on 353,988 hectares of land in the last season. The average production on each hectare was 4.34 tones, the sources said.

DAE Jashore regional additional director Jahidul Amin when contacted said the farmers of the region are very much aware and skill to produce crops round the year. 

They have been applying modern tools and equipments in the fields as per the advice of the DAE officials which has been helping them benefit from Boro and other crops.
