Janmashtami celebrated across country

Janmashtami of Sri Krishna, one of the major festivals of the Hindu community, was celebrated across the country on Friday with due religious fervour and enthusiasm. Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad and other religious, cultural and social organisations chalked out elaborate programmes in different districts in order to observe the Janmashtami.

In Rajshahi, Janmastami was celebrated in Rajshahi city and its adjacent areas with various programmes. The day’s programmes included worship of Lord Krishna, GeetaJagna, Kirtan, distribution of sweetmeats, discussions and peace processions, reports our Rajshahi Correspondent.  As part of the celebration, members of the Hindu Community led by Janmastami Celebration Parishad brought out a jubilant procession in the city. City unit general secretary of Bangladesh Awami League Dablu Sarker, Central Committee Vice-president of Hindu, Buddhist and Christian Oikya Parishad Anil Kumar Sarker and its Rajshahi City unit General Secretary Shyamal Kumar Ghosh, President of Janmashtami Celebration Parishad Alok Kumar Das and General Secretary Tapan Kumar Sen joined the rally, among others.

Meanwhile, Rajshahi University authorities celebrated the Janmashtami on its campus in a befitting manner. They organised a discussion meeting with Prof Bishwanath Shikder, President of Central Puja Udjapan Parishad, in the chair. Acting Vice Chancellor Prof Chowdhury Jakaria and Pro-VC Prof Ananda Kumar Shaha spoke on the occasion. In Chattogram, thousands of Hindu devotees took part in the Mahashobha Yatra as well jubilant procession in the port city on Friday morning, reports our Staff Correspondent from Chattogram. 

Anindya Banerjee, Assistant Indian High Commissioner, inaugurated the Mahashobha Yatra. Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation AJM Nasir Uddin was present as the chief guest.  In Bogura, the festival was celebrated in the district through various arrangements. Bogura district administration and Hindu Dhormiya Kalyan Trust jointly brought out a colourful procession in the district town in the morning. A good number of members of Hundu community took part in the procession, reports our Bogura Correspondent. 

Later, a discussion was held at Zila School with trustee of Hindu Dhormiya Kalyan Trust Ujjal Prasahd Kanu in the chair. Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Bogura Foyez Ahmed spoke at the discussion as the chief guest. Acting president of district Awami League and chairman of Zila Parishad also spoke at the event, among others.  

In Jashore, Keshabpur Uapzila Puja Udjapan Parishad brought out a colourful procession and arranged a discussion at the upazila of Jashore to observe the Janmashtami, reports our Keshabpur Correspondent.  Divisional Commissioner of Khulna Lokman Hossain Mia spoke at the discussion as the chief guest held on the premises of Keshabpur Pilot School and College. President of Keshabpur Uapzila Puja Udjapan Parishad Shyamal Sarker chaired the event, while it was addressed, among others, by Deputy Commissioner of Jashore Md Shafiul Arif, chairman of Keshabpur Upazila Parishad Alhajj Rafiqul Islam, and upazila Awami League president SM Ruhul Amin. 

In Pabna, on this occasion, Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad brought out a colourful procession at Santhia upazila in the district. Later, a discussion was held on the premises of Kalibari temple, reports our Santhia Correspondent. Former State Minister for Home Affairs Advocate Shamsul Haque Tuku, spoke at the discussion as the chief guest with president of Santhua upazila unit of Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad Sushil Kumar Das in the chair. Mayor of Santhia municipality Mirazul Islam Pramanik, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdul Halim, woman vice chairman of the upazila Selima Sultana Sheela, Awami League leaders Hasan Ali Khan, Puja Udjapan Parsihad leaders Ajay Kumar Das and Ratan Das also spoke at the event, among others.  Janmashtami festival was also celebrated at Bera upazila in the district. A discussion and cultural function was held at Haribari Central Temple, reports our Bera Correspondent.
