The Islamic University (IU) unit of Bangladesh Students’ Union (BSU) organized a day-long workshop on Thursday, aiming to inspire student engagement in politics and promote awareness about the role of student movements in societal change. The event took place at the TSCC corridor on the campus and started at 10:00 am.
Mahmudul Hasan, president of the IU BSU unit, presided over the event, while general secretary Nur Alam Siddique conducted the workshop. The program featured discussions by eminent speakers, including Professor Dr. Saiful Islam from the Management department and Professor Dr. Bashir Ahmed from the Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering department at IU. RU BSU unit’s former president SM Chandon and Jhenaidah Communist Party general secretary Shapan Bagchi also shared insights during the event.
Other notable attendees included KM Sharif, president of the Bangladesh Udichi Shilpi Gosthi Jhenaidah Zilla unit, and SM Sweet, former secretary of the IU BSU unit and coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement.
The workshop’s discussions covered critical themes such as student politics before and after the July uprising, the history and traditions of student unions, education, and the economy. The discussants emphasized the importance of students’ political and cultural engagement in shaping a just and equitable society. The event was further enlivened with performances of national and mass music, enhancing its cultural significance.
Earlier, the BSU unit organized a rally in memory of the martyrs of the language movement and the July uprising. The rally circled various roads on the campus, paying tribute to historical movements that have shaped the nation.
The workshop concluded with a call to action for students to uphold the legacy of activism and foster a progressive future.
