Students of Islamic University (IU) held a protest rally demanding justice for the gang rape and murder of Doctor Moumita Debnath in Kolkata. IU’s ‘Anti-discrimination Student Movement’ organized the rally under the banner on Saturday around noon at the campus’s ‘Diana Square’.

Around a hundred students participated in the event, including the coordinators and assistant coordinators of the ‘Anti-discrimination Student Movement’. The students called for the maximum punishment and demanded justice for those involved in the incident, and also demanded justice for incidents of violence and rape against women in both Bangladesh and India.

In the rally, students stated that in India, 87 rape cases are reported every day. In Bangladesh, 14 rape cases are reported daily, but none receives exemplary punishment. The students stressed that no one should fall victim to discrimination and demanded exemplary punishment for all these cases.

Sadia Mahmud Meem, the assistant coordinator of the ‘Anti-discrimination Student Movement’ said, ‘I am scared. We are worried about our safety. Do not force women to take up arms for their safety. Ensured justice for all cases of murder, violence, harassment, rape, and assault against women. Otherwise, we will be forced to take up arms for our safety.’

IU’s ‘Anti-discrimination Student Movement’ coordinator Muklesur Rahman Sweet said, ‘Gang rapes are happening consistently in India and also violence and rape against women have occurred in Bangladesh under the fascist Sheikh Hasina government. They haven’t been able to properly deliver justice for the widely discussed cases. If India does not take action regarding these issues, we will not remain silent. Justice must be ensured for both the hellish cases and those that have not come to light. No female student should be harassed on my campus. We will ensure their safety. If anyone causes unjust trouble, we will respond firmly.’
