The Islamic University of Bangladesh (IU) will start online classes from next Tuesday. This decision was made on Sunday, during an emergency Deans Committee meeting chaired by Professor Dr Matinur Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The meeting was attended by all the deans of the university’s eight faculties and the co-coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement at EB. Multiple deans confirmed the details of the meeting.
The committee decided that the heads of each department should call an emergency academic committee meeting and take necessary steps to begin online classes. The meeting also emphasized publishing the results of the Bachelor’s 4th year and Master’s programs as soon as possible. Additionally, a decision was made to resume offline academic activities from next week, subject to approval from the Ministry of Education.
In another significant decision, the senior professor and Dean of the Faculty of Theology, Dr. Siddikur Rahman Ashrafi, was appointed to handle urgent administrative and financial duties until a new vice-chancellor is appointed. Dr. Ashrafi was unanimously nominated based on his seniority. It was also decided that, in his absence, the next senior professors from the Deans Committee would take over these responsibilities.
Dr. Ashrafi said, “Based on the ministry’s letter, I have been given the charge as the senior dean, and I will carry out the necessary duties until a new vice-chancellor is appointed.” He added that steps would be taken to inform department heads about starting online classes on Tuesday. Dr. Ashrafi also assured that pending work, including the publication of student results, would be completed promptly.
IU’s move to online classes aims to ensure that students' education continues without disruption until offline classes can safely resume.
