It’s Tigers’ best Test squad in years: Harsha

Harsha Bhogle, a renowned Indian cricket commentator and analyst, has expressed high praise for the 16-man Bangladesh squad selected for the upcoming two-Test series against India. He regards this squad as the most impressive he has seen from Bangladesh in a considerable period and anticipates a strong performance from the Tigers against the hosts.

Bhogle's analysis highlights the strength of Bangladesh's pace attack, which he believes is a significant asset. Nahid Rana, one of the standout bowlers, has shown remarkable potential with his genuine pace, which has troubled top batsmen, including those from Pakistan. Hasan Mahmud has also demonstrated his wicket-taking abilities, and this series presents another opportunity for him to shine. Taskin Ahmed, who has been highly rated by many, may see this series as a crucial chance to reaffirm his capabilities.

The squad's depth is further underscored by the presence of three genuine fast bowlers. Additionally, the top eight batsmen include two players capable of keeping wickets, both of whom are proficient enough to be selected purely as batsmen. This versatility is complemented by two accomplished spin-bowling all-rounders, Shakib Al Hasan and Mehedi Hasan Miraz, who have consistently improved their performances.

Bhogle notes that the batting lineup's strength is evident in the positions of Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Das, and Mehedi Hasan Miraz, who are all batting lower than their potential positions. This arrangement indicates a robust batting depth and strength, which is a positive sign for the team.

Litton Das and Mehedi Hasan Miraz are seen as players ready to take on more prominent roles within the team. With Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim nearing the end of their careers, Liton and Mehedi are poised to step up as key figures in the squad.

For Bangladesh to mount a serious challenge against India in the series starting on September 19 in Chennai, the top four batsmen must deliver substantial runs. The captain, Najmul Shanto, and Mominul Haque, who has been a mainstay in the batting lineup, need to find form and provide a solid foundation. The pressure on the middle order will be immense if the top order fails to perform, especially given the unfamiliar pitch conditions they are likely to encounter in India.

India, aware of Bangladesh's spin strength, is expected to prepare pitches that do not favour spin, thereby minimising the advantage of Bangladesh's quality finger spinners, Shakib, Taijul Islam, and Mehedi Hasan. Instead, Bangladesh should be prepared for a stern test against India's formidable pace attack, which could include the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and possibly Akashdeep or Yash Dayal.

Despite the strengths of the Bangladesh squad, Bhogle maintains that India will start the series as overwhelming favourites. However, he hopes to see a spirited fight from Bangladesh, which would make for an engaging and competitive two-Test series.
