Chairman of Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ) Maulana Abdul Latif Nezami died at Islami Bank Central Hospital at Kakrail in the capital at about 8:30 pm on Monday. He was 80. He left behind his wife, two sons and two daughters.
He was taken to the hospital after he collapsed while performing ablution after Iftar at his residence at Gupibagh area in the capital. Doctors said that Nezami suffered a brain haemorrhage.
Maulana Abdul Latif Nezami was buried at his family graveyard at Itakhola village in Narsingdi on Tuesday morning. Nezami became Islami Oikya Jote chairman in 2012 after death of the then chairman Mufti Fazlul Huq Amini. He was also the editor and publisher of the Dainik Sarker.
IOJ had long been there in the BNP-led alliance since its formation. However, a faction of the party, led by Nezami, quit the BNP’s 20-party alliance on June 7 in 2016. Another faction, led by MA Rakib, is still with the BNP-led alliance.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Bangladesh National Awami Party’s chairman Jebel Rahman Gani and secretary general M Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan and Jatiya Dal chairman Syed Ehsanul Huda expressed their deep shock at the death of Nezami.
