Intra-party conflict in the ruling Awami league (AL) made the political situation critical. The situation in Jhenaidah-1 constituency (Shailkupa) worsened day by day when two heavyweight candidates for the twelfth national polls are blaming each other for violating election code of conduct.
Not only that the election commission (EC) had already filed a case against ‘Boat’ symbol candidate, incumbent lawmaker Abdul Hyee, upazila parishad chairman M Abdul Hakim Ahmed and Sarutia union parishad (UP) chairman Mahmudul Hasam Mamun for violating the election code of conduct. The accused have appeared in the concerned court on Tuesday, said a source related to the EC in Jhenaidah. EC sources said a total of 306,336 voters likely to casting their votes in the polls scheduled for January 7 next where six candidates including incumbent lawmaker Abdul Hyee has been contesting with the party symbol ‘Boat’.
Abdul Hyee is the president of the ruling AL Jhenaidah unit. But the seat is very crucial in politics as there is an acute intra-party conflict among the leaders. Voters are aware of the conflict. Five other candidates including independent candidate industrialist as well as the owner of Daily Kalbela Nazrul Islam Dulal, is contesting with ‘Truck’ symbol, Trinamool BNP candidate KM Jahangir Majmader with ‘Sonali Ansh’ symbol, Jataiya Party candidate Monika Alam with ‘Langal’ (Plough), another independent candidate Munia Afrin with ‘Phulkopi’ (Coliflower) and National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Anichur Rahman fighting with ‘Aam’ (Mango) in the polls.
Abdul Hyee was the state minister for the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock in the previous tenure of the government, now moving here and there with his team for election campaign.
Most of the union level AL leaders and activists wish to see him elected as a lawmaker again so that he could finish his ‘unfinished tasks’ like dilapidated roads, educational institutions, improve healthcare services and arrange employment of huge men and women in the constituency.
Another heavyweight candidate Nazrul Islam alias Dulal Biswas, known as a dynamic leader who is contesting with the symbol ‘Truck’, is also a potential AL candidate for Jhenaidah- 1 seat. One of the vice-presidents of Jhenaidah district unit AL, Dulal was the Krishak League central committee vice president.
Nazrul Islam alias Dulal Biswas in the meantime has turned as one of the young generation leaders among his party and front organization leaders for his outstanding performance for creating employment of thousands of young men and women in his industry, playing significant role in mitigating social conflicts in crime-prone Shailkupa upazila.
He has committed to make the upazila free from, hoodlums, terrorism, social conflict in the name of politics, toll collection from various offices and establishments, and make the constituency livable as desired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina within a few years if he was elected as a JS member.
