A two-day-long inter-university debate competition begins today at Jahangirnagar University. Jahangirnagar University Debating Society (JUDS), in association with Universal Medical College and Hospital, is going to host the competition marking its silver jubilee celebration.
Md Obaidullah, convenor of the event, disclosed the event on Tuesday afternoon in a press conference held at the Jahangirnagar University Press Club office.
“A total of 32 teams from 32 universities will participate in the event and the Asian Parliamentary Debate format will be followed,” said Obaidullah.
The first round of the debate will be held at the university’s new Arts Faculty building on Friday. Eight teams will be selected for the quarterfinals through four rounds. After the quarter-final and semi-final rounds, two teams will qualify for the final debate, said Obaidullah.
On Saturday, the day will begin with rallies and joyous processions. JUDS moderator Prof Ahmed Reza will inaugurate the colorful rally with the participation of its members and alumni at 11 am. This will be followed by a tree plantation programme at noon and an exhibition debate at 4 pm. The curtain will come down with the final session of the competition and prize distribution ceremony at the Salim Al Deen Muktomonchho at 6pm. JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Nurul Alam will distribute the prize among the winners as the chief guest, while Pro VC (Administration) Prof Sheikh Md Monzurul Huq, Pro VC (Education) Prof Mohammed Mostafa Feeroz, and Treasurer Prof. Rasheda Akhtar will be present as special guests.
The winning team will get a round-trip flight from Dhaka to Cox's Bazar, courtesy of US Bangla Airlines. The winning team will also get two days and two nights on the island of Saint Martins, courtesy of Belabhumi Eco Resort.
JUDS president Mir Hasibul Hassan Rishad said, the organization has always maintained its identity in the debate arena. The participation of the best debating teams across the country in the event will further increase the dynamism of the organization. I hope that JUDS will lead from the front in the debate arena by organizing regular debate competitions.
