Indo-Bangla Journalists Forum urges media to avoid spreading false reports on minority attacks

The Indo-Bangla Journalists Forum (IBJF) has expressed grave concern over the circulation of false and exaggerated reports by certain media outlets, especially on social media and digital platforms, concerning attacks on minorities in Bangladesh following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and the subsequent fall of the Awami League government.

Distorted images and misinformation about violent assaults on Bangladesh’s minority Hindu community—comprising approximately 8% of the population—have intensified communal tensions in various parts of India.

While it is acknowledged that some extremist groups in Bangladesh have attempted to exploit the political transition by targeting minorities and their places of worship, these isolated incidents were met with resistance from student leaders and conscientious citizens who opposed Hasina’s government.

IBJF President Geetartha Pathak, a former member of the Press Council of India, and General Secretary Khairujjaman Kamal have called on all media outlets to refrain from disseminating unverified news that could exacerbate social divisions and tensions.

“Changes in government are natural, but they should not disrupt social harmony, national integrity, or the diverse fabric of society,” stated the IBJF in a press release.

“Issues such as job quotas, unemployment, price increases, corruption, and economic mismanagement affect all citizens regardless of their religious, caste, or cultural identity. The people of Bangladesh have the right to address these issues through democratic means and without resorting to violence. Therefore, we urge the incoming government to ensure the safety and security of minorities and to protect journalists, calling for fair compensation for those killed during the student protests against job quotas.”
