India has officially selected the Hindi-language film 'Laapataa Ladies' as its submission for the 2025 Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category. Directed by Kiran Rao, the comedy had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) last year and has been well-received on the festival circuit.

'Laapataa Ladies' won the nomination over Payal Kapadia's 'All We Imagine As Light,' which was seen as a strong contender after its critical success and Grand Jury Prize win at Cannes. Kiran Rao's film, with its humorous and heartwarming storyline, has resonated with audiences, making it a suitable choice for the Oscar race. The film follows two young brides, Jaya and Phool, who accidentally get switched while traveling to their weddings on the same train. Covered in matching red wedding veils, they find themselves at the wrong ceremonies, leading to a series of comedic and life-altering events. This lighthearted satire offers a unique take on traditional wedding customs in India.  The distribution rights for 'Laapataa Ladies' have been acquired by Yash Raj Films, and the movie will premiere on Netflix India after its theatrical release.

India has faced challenges in gaining recognition at the Oscars, with only three films ever nominated for Best International Feature: 'Mother India' (1957), 'Salaam Bombay' (1988), and 'Lagaan' (2001). While 'RRR' did not receive a nomination in this category, it made history last year by winning an Oscar for Best Original Song. This milestone reflects a growing global recognition for Indian cinema and highlights the importance of 'Laapataa Ladies' as a representation of thecountry’s rich film heritage.
