Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has invited the independent lawmakers of the 12th Parliament to the Ganabhaban to hold a meeting with them on Sunday.

“The prime minister will meet the independent lawmakers at her official residence Ganabhaban at 6:30 pm on Sunday," AL Office Secretary Biplab Barua told reporters on Wednesday.

Mahmud Hasan Sumon, elected from Mymensingh-8 constituency, told Bangladesh Post that he got the invitation.

“I have been invited to attend a meeting at Ganabhaban,” he said.

The 12th parliamentary elections were held on January 7 amid boycott by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliance.

The ruling AL candidates have secured victory in 223 out of 299 constituencies in the 12th national polls. The voting in Noagaon-2 was suspended following the death of a candidate there.

The AL has paved ways for grassroots leaders to contest the general elections due to the boycott by the BNP. As a result, some 62 independent candidates became victorious, resulting in grouping in some areas. Incidents of violent clashes were also reported.

In the polls, Jatiya Party (Ershad) got 11 seats, Bangladesh Workers Party, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) and Bangladesh Kalyan Party got one seat each.
