Today is the 90th birth anniversary of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib. Throughout her life as the better half of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman she had supported her husband always with a smile. In times of great turmoil and distress she used to take care of the family and look after their needs. Not under any circumstance, no matter how dire the situation was, she never let the children catch any whiff of the crisis their family was in, when Bangabandhu was in jail or being persecuted by the police.

Those who knew Bangabandhu closely reiterate her contributions to the days leading to and during the War of Independence. One such description was given by the former President Zillur Rahman on one such a day commemorating the birth anniversary of Begum Mujib --- she was crucial in resolving many political and national crises. Her hard work, perseverance and intelligence gave much boost to Bangabandhu during his times incarcerated.

Bangamata also developed a keen sense of politics living so many years with Bangabandhu. Oftentimes, she offered advice to him regarding some of his political programmes and her husband kept those in his head. A simple housewife after her marriage, Begum Mujib slowly developed sharp eyes, ears and senses regarding the volatile politics towards the last years of Pakistan. She almost had a sixth sense about what harm was lurking in the shadows and she accordingly advised her husband.

When faced with political uncertainties outside, she shouldered the responsibility of raising five children in a calm and composed manner. No doubt, her support at home made it possible for Bangabandhu to devote full energy to working for the creation of Bangladesh.
