Scores of people under the banner of Rajshahi Raksha Sangram Parishad organised a human chain and held a roadside meeting at Shaheb Bazar zero point of Rajshahi on Wednesday morning demanding implementation of Santahar-Rohanpur Railway Project and the North Rajshahi Irrigation Project immediately. The speakers also demanded to stop conspiracy with these vital projects by a vested quarter.
Presided over by RRSP President Liakat Ali, the programme was addressed, among others, by RRSP Gen Secy Jamat Khan, Akbarul Hasan Millat, Freedom fighter Dr Abdul Mannan, Debashish Pramanik Debu, Freedom fighter Shahjahan Ali Borjahan, Golam Nabi Rony, journalist Reazul Islam Selim, Selina Begum, Eng Khaja Tareque, Alauddin Al Azad, Abu Saleh Md Fattah, AKM jobayed Hossain, Dr Zahid Hasan and Al-Amin.
Speakers at the programme said the 99 km Satahar-Rohanpur railway project remained suspended for more than eight decades. They said implementation of this project is necessary for carrying agricultural products from the northern region at a low cost.
Speakers at the programme also demanded to implement North Rajshahi Irrigation Project and said people of Rajshahi have been demanding through various movements to implement the project for the last 20-year. Though the project has been included under the Delta Plan of the government, it is not being implemented for mysterious reasons. They said the project was also a part of the election pledges by the Prime Minister. They mentioned, implementation of the project will save the Barind region from the grip of desertification by using surface water for irrigation and other purposes.
