A mobile court conducted an eviction drive at Ishwardi Upazila in Pabna district to remove the illegal structures adjacent to Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) Project area on Saturday. The drive was conducted to ensure the safety of the project.

The eviction drive was led by Ishwardi Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and also Executive Magistrate of the mobile court Subir Kumar Das.

The mobile court was conducted from Saturday morning to evening. A total of 127 illegal structures were evicted, including shops and hotels, from the surrounding area of Ishwardi-Kushtia highway at Rooppur intersection in the project area.

Mobile court sources said the locals have built business organisations, hotels and other structures occupying the Pabna Roads and Highway Department’s land at Rooppur intersection. Notice was sent to them to leave the area and move to other places for the safety of the project. However, as they did not leave the area, an eviction drive was conducted on Saturday.

UNO and Executive Magistrate of the mobile court Subir Kumar Das said Rooppur project is very important and the largest mega project of the country. Business organisations, hotels and other structures were built illegally in Roads and Highway Department’s lands around the project. Several notices were given to the occupiers to move the illegal structures. However, they did not pay heed to the notices. So, eviction drive was conducted.

Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Ishwardi Upazila Shahadat Hossain Khan, Officer-in-Charge of the police station Md Rafiqul Islam, officials from Roads and Highway Department and a large number of law enforcement force members were present during the eviction drive.
