A human chain and protest rally was held demanding the release of former UP Chairman Uzzal Sheikh in Narail on Monday.
Hundreds of men and women participated in the human chain and protest rally for Singasholpur Union Parishad former chairman Uzzal Sheikh of Sadar Upazila who is also president of Parbotti Bidyapit and Gobra Bazar Committee.
Hafez Maulana Aref Billah, Rakibul Islam, Suchitra Biswas, and Monirul Islam among others spoke during the protest rally.
Speakers said that the Uzzal chairman is being arrested and harassed in the conspiracy case filed by Newton, a murderer and identified terrorist involved in drug trade. Besides, the followers are being intimidated in various ways.
They have also informed that the chairman stands beside the helpless, poor and distressed people of the area.
Meanwhile, wife of former chairman Uzzal Sheikh in a letter to the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police informed that the terrorist Newton Gazi, son of Abul Hossain Gazi of Gobra village and his followers are trying to disrupt law and order by threatening mass people in this area.
According to police sources, Newton’s residence in Gobra village of Narail Sadar upazila was attacked on June 2nd around 12:30 pm. During the incident, his personal vehicle was set on fire, and another house was also vandalized.
Newton Gazi took legal action by lodging a complaint and filing a case at the Sadar police station, identifying 15 suspects, including former UP Chairman Uzzal Sheikh and Abdus Sattar Sheikh's son from Gobra village.
The police detained former chairman Uzzal and Abdur Razzak on June 4th, subsequently placing them in custody.
