Only an 800 long U-patern dam on a portion of an irrigation canal at Sonatonpur of Harinaundu upazila in Jhenaidah made the water bodies unproductive. It had thrown the fishermen community people in trouble as they are not in a position to produce fish on 2.5 kilometer long canal. To protect the canal and remove the dam, hundreds of people with banners and festoons appeared on the dam on Sunday morning.
The leaders involved in fish farming and culture said Bangladesh water development board (BWDB) in 1981 had excavated 800 meters of new river bed at Sonatanpur. They constructed a U pattern dam on the canal on 2.50 kilometers out of total area for 5.00 kilometers. The fishermen started fish farming on the excavated area 42 acres in 1092-93 fiscal where the government was procuring revenue for Tk six lakh. The human chain activists said a vested quarter has been attempting to release the excavated area, and the fishermen will fell unemployed when the government had been conducting drives to increase the fish production and ensure everybody employment. Sonatonpur Baor Rakkha committee president Abu bakar Siddique, general secretary Elem Mandal, member Rabin Halder, Abanish Halder, Sukumar Halder and Swapan halder among others spoke.
