Human chain formed in Narail

Published : 06 Mar 2021 09:20 PM

A human chain was formed demanding formation of proposed 'Chanchuri-Purulia Upazila' in Narail on Saturday. 'Chanchuri-Purulia Upazila' implementation committee organized the human chain at Chanchuri Bazar in Chanchuri Union.

Chanchuri UP Chairman and General Secretary of the union Awami League Sirajul Islam Hirak, Kalia Upazila Awami League Health and Population Secretary M Zakatur Rahman, Businessman Abul Kalam Azad alias Kalam Mollah and others spoke at the programme. President of Purulia Union Awami League and President of the proposed Chanchuri-Purulia Upazila Implementation Committee freedom fighter Md. Idris Ali Mollah presided over the function.

The speakers said if an upazila is implemented in Chanchuri-Purulia which is the old business center of the district, development in various sectors including education, culture, law and order situation, trade and commerce, agriculture and health services will be facilitated.

Chanchuri-Purulia Upazila Implementation Committee leader M Zakatur Rahman said the proposed formation of Chanchuri-Purulia Upazila is under consideration of the upazila nirbahi officer, deputy commissioner of Narail and Khulna divisional commissioner. After that, if the secretariate committee passes the formation order of Chanchuri-Purulia Upazila, it will go to prime minister for consideration.

It is learnt that the socio-economic and communication system of Sadar and Kalia upazilas is very fragile. There are seven unions including Chanchuri, Purulia, Babra-Hachla, Peroli, Mauli, Panchagram of Kalia upazila and Singasholpur of sadar upazila located in the remote areas divided by Nabaganga and Chitra rivers.

The law and order situation here is also unstable. Riots and fights happen almost always in these areas, as there is no administrative police station here. Therefore, it becomes difficult for the police to control the situation, added the speakers.

For these reasons, people of the area have been holding meetings, press conferences and processions at different times since 2011 demanding a new upazila including those 7 unions. Although the matter has gone a long way, it has not seen the face of success yet.
