Hundreds of people from all walks of life formed a human chain in Kaliganj town to protect the century-old road side Koroi trees.
The human chain was formed at Baishakhi petrol pump in the town on Wednesday morning.
The activists of non-government organizations, environment protectors and media activists under the banner of Youth against hunger came under the same umbrella.
Youth against hunger Kaliganj unit joint convener Fauzur Rahman Sabit, Sheikh Sadi, Ali Hossain and Eti Banarjee among others spoke.
The speakers said there are over a hundred century old Koroi trees have been rendering oxygen and shade to the people since their inception.
The trees staying at Baishakhi petrol pump to Mobarakganj sugar mills and Janata bank Kaliganj Bazer branch on Khulna- Jashore highway.
The trees are well known to the people of the country as well as some parts of Asia for their huge size.
They said the government had taken decision to fell the trees to expand the highway to six lanes.
They had demanded to expand the highway reducing the dried and decayed branches.
It is to be mentioned that hundreds of century-old trees in Kaliganj upazila are protecting the envrionment of this region and ben the living history of Jashore.
