The farmers in Jhenaidah are happy as they are expecting better yield of the Transplanting Aman (T-Aman) in the current season as huge saplings were produced on their seed beds to meet the seasonal demand.
The farmers from neighboring Sripurupazila in Magura and adjacent villages of ChuadangaSadarupazila have been rushing in Jhenidah markets for collecting TAman saplings when the Jheniadah farmers have produced additional saplings in the season.
According to farmer Daud Hossain of Gakulnagar village of Shailkupaupazila in Jhenaidah when contacted said he brought 100 decimals of land under the T Aman farming in the season as against last season’s 80 decimals. He brought additional land when the farmers were receiving better prices and yield for last two years.
The farmer said the sapling he produced might cover about 150 decimals of land. The remaining will be sold in the marketamong the farmers of neighboring Sripurupazila of Magura.
According to the office of the deputy director of the department of agriculture extension (DAE) in Jhenaidah, they had taken target to produce 306,081 tons of rice on 104,125 hectares of land in last season. The farmers of JhenaidahSadar, Kaliganj, Kotchandpur, bordering Moheshpur, Shailkupa and Harinakunduupazilahad produced a total of 352,515 tons of T Aman rice on 104,125 hectares of land in the last season.
DAE sources said the high yielding variety (HYV) saplings was produced on 168 hectares of land which will cover about 3,360 hectares of T Aman land, while hybrid variety of saplings produced on 5,403 hectares, will cover 135,075 hectares of land in the season.
The additional saplings will cover additional 35,000 hectares of land that might be collected by the farmer of the neighboring upazila farmers if necessary.
Deputy Director (DD) of DAE in JhenidahKripangshuShekhar Biswas, when contacted said the farmers of his area are aware enough about thefarming all along. They have been expanding their T Aman cultivation due to good prices of paddy and straw in last two years.
