How EdTech is transforming learning

Published : 06 Sep 2024 09:29 PM

Educational technology (EdTech) is evolving rapidly, driven by both software and hardware companies. In today’s distraction-filled world, keeping students engaged is a challenge. Devices like tablets and smartphones often compete for students' attention during lessons.

However, when used effectively, technologies such as smartboards and AI-powered presentation tools can enhance learning and create positive educational environments. Many companies are working to develop solutions that capture and maintain students' interest.

Maryam Hassani, acting head of trends and innovation at the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority, reports that the global EdTech market is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 12.9% by 2032. In 2022, North America led this growth with a 36% revenue share.

“This surge in EdTech is reshaping learning journeys,” Hassani told TechNewsWorld. “It’s offering new ways to spark curiosity in STEM fields and tailor lessons for children with special needs.”

The impact of EdTech extends beyond early and special education. AI-powered tools are helping educators simplify complex concepts and make lessons more relatable at all levels of instruction.

Emerging EdTech Trends

JQ Sirls, co-founder and CEO of Storytailor, highlighted some key trends. “Personalised learning through AI is making education more tailored to individual needs,” he said. “Gamification is making learning engaging, and a focus on inclusivity ensures that tools are accessible to all students.”

Smart Technologies exemplifies how computer-based methods are enhancing EdTech. The company offers solutions that help educators connect effectively using a variety of products.

Effective Adoption of EdTech

Jeff Lowe, executive vice president at Smart Technologies, emphasises a thoughtful approach to adopting new technology. Schools should first identify the software needed and then find suitable hardware. “The process starts with teaching practices, then you select software that supports these practices,” he said.

Lowe noted that many schools make the mistake of focusing on hardware before understanding how it will support teaching. Effective adoption requires thorough training that emphasises how technology enhances teaching and learning, not just how to use it.

Smart Technologies trains educators using their own staff of current and former teachers, ensuring that the training is practical and relevant. However, Lowe warns against one-time training events. Ongoing, scalable training involving school leaders and tech directors is crucial for successful implementation.

Community and Support

To support educators, Smart Technologies offers an ambassador programme and online community where teachers share best practices and seek advice. This global network helps educators integrate EdTech effectively into their classrooms.

“EdTech should not feel like an additional burden,” Lowe said. “It should seamlessly fit into existing teaching methods, making technology a natural part of the educational process.”

By focusing on thoughtful adoption and comprehensive training, schools can maximise the benefits of EdTech and create more engaging and effective learning environments.
