A 13-year-old girl named Manimala has committed suicide by hanging in Sarishabari of Jamalpur for allegedly stealing money. The incident took place at Meiya village in Pingna union of the upazila on Sunday.
Adolescent Manimala is the daughter of Mainal Miah of Pakuria village in Madhupur upazila of Tangail. It is learned that she used to live in the house of Nana Abdus Samad in Meiya village in Pingna union since childhood.
According to police and the victim's family, due to poor financial condition of grandfather Abdus Samad, Manimala took the job of housemaid in the house of Minhaj and Ratna Begum to a nearby village three months ago. Since joining, she was often subjected to physical abuse if she made a mistake. Three days ago, Ratna and her family members physically abused Manimala, accusing her of stealing money. Unable to bear the torture, Manimala fled to her grandfather's house in Meiya village. At that time, Minhaj and Ratna, the landlords, threatened her and forced her to return to work. In this incident, Manimala was emotionally broken. She later committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his grandfather's house on Sunday.
Police have visited the spot. No one was arrested till this news was written.
Mir Rakibul Haque, OC of Sarishabari Police Station, said the body of the girl was recovered at night. The body of the teenager was sent to the district morgue for autopsy on Monday morning.
