The Ministry of Home Affairs has sent a letter to the Election Commission (EC) seeking permission to transfer 79 policemen ahead of the national election, slated for January 7, 2024.
The letter sought consent on the transfer or posting of 30 inspectors (armed), 46 inspectors (unarmed), and three more inspectors (city and vehicles) of the police department, according to home ministry sources.
The Election Commission decided to transfer OCs from all police stations in phrases to ensure the smooth and peaceful holding of the upcoming 12th national elections. Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) has decided to withdraw the officers-in-charge (OCs) of Shailkupa and Harinakundu police stations in Jhenaidah.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the EC Saturday.
Additional secretary of the EC Ashok Kumar Debnath said the EC has decided to withdraw the OCs after finding evidence of inaction of these two police stations in reports sent by the returning officer and the police superintendent.
At the same time, the EC issued a letter addressing the senior secretary of the Public Security Division to attach eligible officers in those two posts today.
The letter states that the EC has decided to withdraw the two OCs to ensure a fair and neutral election.
