Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury stated that the majority of issues within the prison system could be resolved by eliminating bribery and corruption.
He emphasized the importance of tackling these issues while addressing prison officials as the chief guest held at the Department of Prisons in Bakshibazar on Monday.
“The anti-discrimination student movement was not just about quotas; it was largely driven by issues such as bribery, corruption, and rising commodity prices,” said Lt Gen Chowdhury.
During the session, the advisor stressed that there is no alternative to ending bribery, urging prison authorities to take immediate steps to eliminate corruption within the system.
“Bribery must stop. No matter what, it has to be eradicated,” he added.
Lt Gen Chowdhury also called for reforms to turn prisons into effective correctional facilities, recommending improvements in the quality of food provided to both guards and inmates, along with skill-enhancing training programs for prison staff.
Addressing the prison officials directly, he said, “Ensuring prison security is your primary responsibility. Restore your honour by refusing to take bribes, as corruption damages both personal and institutional reputations.”
The meeting also included discussions on improving employee welfare, discipline, and personal record management. The advisor listened to the officers’ various concerns and demands.
Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General Syed Md Motaher Hossain and other senior officials from various levels of the Prison Directorate were present in the event.
