Home Adviser Lt. Gen. Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) on Thursday called upon the police to take a tougher stance to erase public resentment towards them.

“Police have to come out of the public perception that they are involved in bribery, extortion, corruption and irregularities. It’s very crucial to free the society from injustice and establish peace in the society,” he said.

The adviser made the remarks while addressing a gathering of newly appointed 26 superintendents of police (SP) at the Conference Room of the Home Ministry at Secretariat in the capital on Thursday.

“Bribery and extortion are the main sources of corruption. Many injustice and unjust can be removed from the society if these two menaces can be wipe out,” the adviser said.

“Tyranny of the middlemen will be stopped if these are addressed properly,” he noted saying it will allow farmers getting fair price of their products and low price of essentials for consumers giving them a more comfortable life.”

The adviser asked the police force to work for the welfare of the people after coming out of bribery,

extortion, corruption and irregularities and thus building public confidence in them.

Urging police to curb irregularities and corruption in recruiting and transfer-posting, the home adviser said, “It must be stopped immediately”. “Tougher action will be taken if any member of police is found indulging in such practice,” he said.

Jahangir asked police to go tough against the criminals saying a criminal, whoever he/she is, must be treated as criminal.
