Eid holidaymakers have started returning to the capital after celebrating the Eid-ul-Fitr in their village homes. An increased number of passengers and buses on major highways were noticed on Friday.
However, traffic movement was normal on most of the roads and highways. Among the holidaymakers, most were working people who returned to the capital to join their workplaces after the Eid vacation.
After visiting Gabtoli, Sayedabad and Mohakhali bus terminals on Friday, it was seen that people were returning to Dhaka by bus, microbus, private car and motorcycle from different districts since morning.
The pressure of Dhaka-bound people increased at the Paturia ferry terminal also. A total of 21 ferries have been kept ready on the Daulatdia-Paturia route to ensure smooth movement of vehicles. Due to less traffic, at present 10-12 ferries are in service.
People were seen coming to Paturia terminal from Daulatdia by ferry and launch without any hassle and walking for one more km to board bus to reach their destinations.
Meanwhile, there were adequate police force in the ferry terminal area to prevent the bus drivers and their associates from charging extra fare from the passengers.
People from 21 districts of the southern region have started returning to work through Banglabazar-Shimulia route. As the day progressed on Friday, the pressure of Dhaka-bound passengers increased at Banglabazar terminal.
There have been allegations of charging extra fare on vehicles.
It was seen on the spot that passengers were coming to Banglabazar in local buses, mini trucks, micro, three-wheelers and motorcycles since Friday morning.
Crowds of Dhaka-bound people were noticed at stations also. Most of the train reached Kamalapur railway station with hundred percent passengers on Friday. Some trains were seen carrying extra passengers.
Some train passengers from Brahmanbaria, Tangail, Jamalpur and Mymensingh said that they had to stand throughout the journey as they did not get any tickets. Each compartment had several times more passengers than seats.
