The number of hippo is gradually increasing at the capital’s national zoo. At present, the number of hippo is 16 there.
According to Bangladesh National Zoo information, it was learned that, during 1980’s two hippos were bought at the zoo then. As there is sufficient hippo at the zoo, the authority concerned has transfer two of them to safari park.
Hippopotamus are the third largest mammals in the world. They generally dwell in the Sahara desert of Africa. In 2006, IUCN red listed this species of herbivorous animals who live for around 40 years.
These grow into adults by the time they are 6-7 years of age. After a gestation period of seven months each baby is born. The sweat coming out of hippos act as moisturizer, which protects them from sunlight and also acts as antibacterial.
They can reach speeds up to 30 kilometres per hour on land because of which it is also known as river horse. During daytime, they spend their time in the water but as night falls they move to the land to eat.
It is said that no one should ever come between a hippo and water as they are known to be very ferocious. Under the vigilant observation of the National Zoo, the number of this endangered animal is increasing gradually.
