The politics of the Rajshahi-4 (Bagmara) constituency has remained highly volatile and challenging since after the Liberation War in 1971.
However, the ruling Awami League and its local leaders tackled all the odds of the political situation with utmost patience and strategy, and by overcoming all the hard times, managed to grab the top political positions in the constituency.
With the change in the overall political situation of the constituency, the ruling Awami League failed to make any progress in politics in Bagmara during the first phase from 1980 to 2004 when SardarAmjad Hossain from Jatiya Party, Abu Hena and later Professor Abdul Gafur from BNP were elected as the Members of Parliament from Bagmara, and DM Ziaur Rahman of BNP was elected as the Upazila Chairman.
Ruling AL tackled the political situation in Bagmara with patience and new leadership in the constituency emerged from the party.
President of Bagmara Upazila Awami League, renowned industrialist Engineer EnamulHaque replaced the JP and BNP-backed politics in the region and was elected the Member of Parliament from the Bagmara (Rajshahi-4) constituency in 2008, and was reelected as an MP for the third time since then.
In Bagmara, incumbent MP Engineer EnamulHaque has a good reputation and popularity among the people of his constituency. Engineer EnamulHaque is likely to seek nomination from Awami League for the next 12th JS polls and he is almost sure to get the nomination from the party chief.
Among other nomination aspirants from AL, the names of Vice-President of Rajshahi District AL Jakirul Islam Shantu, incumbent Mayor of Tahirpur Municipality Abdul Kalam Azad, former Professor of Rajshahi University PM Shafiqul Islam and President of Rajshahi Advocate Bar Association Ibrahim Hossain are worth mentioning.
There are also a number of nomination seekers from BNP as the contestants in the 12th JS polls. They are former BNP MP Professor Abdul Gofur, former President of Rajshahi district BNP Tofazzal Hossain Topu, former Bagmara Upazila Chairman DM Ziaur Rahman Zia, BNP leaders Professor Kamal Hossain, DrZahidunnabiDewanShamim, and former President of district Chhatra Dal Rezaul Karim Tutul.
Abu Taleb and Dr Abu YousufSelim are also likely to seek nominations from the party chiefs of the Jatiya Party, and Abdul AhadKabiraj of Jamaat-e-Islami is likely to seek nomination to contest as the MP from the Rajshahi-4 constituency for the 12th Parliamentary elections.
