Loading and unloading of foreign cargo ships is halted as the local warning signal number three is still in force amid fears of heavy rain at Mongla seaport on Thursday.
The meteorological office has asked the Mongla port to issue three local warning signals from Wednesday due to the formation of deep moving clouds in the North Bay and adjoining areas.
Mongla received 8 mm of rainfall on Wednesday, which is the highest rainfall in Khulna division. However, the rainfall is changing its pattern in an inconsistent manner. Due to the continuous rain, the loading and unloading of foreign cargo ships at Mongla port is being hampered.
Fakhruddin, Harbor Master Commander of Mongla Port Authority, said the shipment of such products including fertiliser and clinker was being stopped amid fear of getting wet in the rain.
Besides, the work of other cargo ships is also being disrupted. Due to heavy rains, work on foreign ships in the port channel has been suspended. However, work is going on at the port jetty, container and car yard.
Meanwhile, Kazi Samsul Haque Road, East Shelabunia's Joybangla and other areas in the eastern part of the municipal town have been inundated due to two days of continuous rain. The owners of the shrimp farms have also suffered due to the heavy rainfall.
