Heat, dust aggravate summer diseases in Rajshahi

Fever and other diseases such as asthma, hepatitis, allergies and pneumonia are spreading fast in Rajshahi during the current summer season.

The amount of dust and sand particles has been increased in the city due to scorching hot weather and dry weather in the region for a long time.

Several physicians in Rajshahi said that using unsafe water, drinking ice-cool water, eating junk foods, ice cream and unhealthy foods during extreme hot weather are also main reasons of such ailments.

Sources said the roads, houses and other things of the city are covered with dust which is very unhealthy for the people. On the other hand, the absence of rain is causing blockage of the drainage systems of the city. As a result, those become ideal grounds for breeding of mosquitoes and flies.

According to a source from Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, at least one among three people is suffering from viral fever in the city during this season. The children and housewives who are engaged in household chores are mostly the victims of it. Doctors advised the women to take extra care of themselves and their children. Children mainly suffer from asthma, whooping cough and pneumonia in the summer for drinking of unsafe water, eating ice-cream and inhaling of dust and sand while breathing.

In Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), the number of child patients with asthma, breathing problems and pneumonia has been increasing day by day.

Dr Ali Nawrose, former child specialist of RMCH, said difficulty in breathing among the children is increasing this season due to the presence of dust in the air.

The pediatrician also suggested the parents to take extra care of their children. The kids must use dust protection masks on their faces when they go outside their houses, he added.

Doctors at the Eye Department of RMCH said, if the dust elements enter into the eyes, those can be very dangerous. It creates allergic reactions and harms the eyes. So, everyone should wash their face and eyes with fresh water after coming home from outside.

Dr Abdul Wadood, former additional chief medical officer at Rajshahi University Medical Centre, said the summer time is very risky for asthma patients. They need extra care. They must use masks when they go outside their houses and try to avoid dust, pollution and smoke.
