A two-day long health camp for the working lactating mothers began at the hall room of Public Library and Club of Gaibandha town on Tuesday.
The District Administration and Department of Women Affairs jointly arranged the camp under the Working Lactating Mother Support Funding Programme to ensure welfare and development of women and children. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdul Matin formally inaugurated the health camp as the chief guest and civil surgeon Dr. AM Akhteruzzaman spoke at the inaugural function as the special guest.
Presided over by deputy director of the department Nargis Jahan, the function was also addressed among others by additional police super Abdul Awal, panel mayor of Gaibandha Municipality Abdus Shahid and medical officer Dr Atiar Rahman.
DC Abdul Matin said the primary goal of the project is to safeguard the health of children and their mothers. The lactating mothers need special care, more nutrition and higher calories as they require more energy in bringing up the newborn babies with sound health, the DC also said.
BGMEA has been implementing the project to support female garment workers with infants, the DC said, adding that every beneficiary gets Taka 800 per month for 36 months as allowance.

On the first day of the health camp, a total of 600 working lactating mothers were given free health care services with oral saline, soaps and high energetic biscuits.
