The High Court (HC) has issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain as to why it won’t pass order to include the Proclamation of Independence of the country in the textbooks of all educational institutions in order to inform the new generations of the history of liberation. The court also asked to form an experts’ committee in this regard.
The High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman issued the order on Monday (December 13) following a writ petition.
In its order, the HC bench asked that the committee to file its report before the court within 90 days.
Advocate Nahid Sultana Juthi moved the writ petition before the court, while Advocate Shakila Rowshon, Advocate Shagufta Tabassum Ahmed and Advocate ABM Shahjahan Akand Masum assisted her. Deputy Attorney General Bipul Baghmar represented the state.
Advocate Uttom Lahiri, a lawyer of the Supreme Court, filed the writ petition on December 2, seeking the higher court’s directive to include the ‘Declaration of Independence’ in the textbooks from primary to higher secondary level to prevent distortion of history.
The petitioner also sought a directive to the government to take action against those who have distorted the liberation history.
A total of 10 officials concerned, including Secretary of Primary and Mass Education, Secretary of Home Affairs Ministry, Secretaries of Secondary and Higher Education Division, Technical and Madrasah Education Division, and Inspector General of police, were respondents in the petition.
