The High Court issued a decision on Monday, ordering an immediate stop to the toll collection from ambulances travelling across the nation on expressways, flyovers, tunnels, ferries, and highways.
The court also issued a directive questioning the legality of such tolls on emergency vehicles.
The bench, comprising Justice Sheikh Hasan Arif and Justice Md Bazlur Rahman, responded to a writ petition filed by Advocate Md Monir Uddin. Adv Monir had previously approached the Secretary of the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry, as well as the Chairmen of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), on July 7, requesting that tolls be waived for ambulances. The writ was filed after no action was taken in response to his application.
This ruling emphasises the court's recognition of the critical role of ambulances and aims to ensure that emergency medical services are not impeded by toll charges.
