Hawkers desperate to occupy N’ganj footpath again

Footpath hawker leaders have warned that they would forge strong movement against the administration and the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) if they are now allowed on footpaths.  

They issued the warning from a rally held on the premises of Chashara Shaheed Minar in Narayanganj on Sunday evening. 

They said that if the authorities resist their sitting on footpath, they would announce tougher programme like hartal, possession and others. 

President of Narayanganj Hawkers League Abdur Rahim Munshi presided over the protest rally and some left leaning local politicians were present.

A loggerhead situation in between hawkers, administration and City Corporation had been running almost ten years last over illegally footpath capturing by the unauthorized hawkers. In the last two years ago on footpath hawker issue an armed clash committed between city Mayor’s fellow and hawkers patronized at Bangabandhu road on June 16, 2018 that left seriously injured city Mayor Ivy and her some fellows who made human shields to save Ivy.

Narayanganj City Corporation had declared clearly no hawker will sit on footpath as the city authority manufactured 700 shops in the name of ‘hawker’s market’ and handed them over around 12 years ago. Allotted all shops sold to other people, the hawkers again demanded footpath totally baseless excuses.

A section of people who are benefited by the hawkers given toll they are mostly provoking the hawkers to capture footpath at any cost to resume their profit.

Hints the police administration and the city corporation hawkers leader uttered in the rally respectively that you don’t remove the drug peddling because you have share in it and you do not remove the mosquito but only you can remove us from the footpath.
