Hathuru’s fate in limbo

Published : 25 Aug 2024 09:17 PM

Hathurusinghe’s contract with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will expire in February 2025, after the end of the Champions Trophy.

As Faruque Ahmed, the new Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president supposed that the board will not renew the contract with Hathurusinghe as the Tigers’ head coach.

Farque Ahmed made it clear his previous stance regarding Hathurusinghe that he wanted to remove Hathuru.

Earlier, after stepping down from his post as the chief selector (in 2026), Faruque was always outspoken about the team’s selection process.

Faruque highlighted the inability of the Sri Lankan as the coach of Bangladesh.

In a press conference on August 21 after taking the charge as BCB president, Faruque said that he would check what is in BCB’s contract with Hathurusinghe before sacking him.

However, the discussion about Hathuru’s removal is not new, when the demand to remove the Sri Lankan has been demanding by former cricket organisers led by Nazmul Hasan Papon BCB did not care about that.

It was learned that since the 2023 ODI World Cup, all the directors of the board wanted to cancel the contract with Hathurusinghe, even if it would be necessary at the cost of compensation.

Hathurusinghe currently draws $25,000 (taka 30,00,000) as monthly salary without income tax when BCB has to pay 30 per cent tax against his monthly salary, therefore, BCB has to cost over $35,000 (taka 42,00,000). According to the contract with Hathurusinghe that if he would be discharged before the contractual period, BCB will have to pay three months’ salary as compensation. Despite the loss, the BCB directors wanted to see off Hathurusinghe, as none of them was happy with his behavior with the players and a distance was built with other coaching staffs.  It was known that some unexpected incident was occurred during the 2023 World Cup that triggered the directors to go against Hathuru’s continuity.

The new BCB president also said that to release a coach at the middle, it would be a bad example.

President told that he will seek the opinion of the cricketer, team management member and chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hussain Lipu, who are now in Pakistan and that will also play an important role to take the final decision regarding Hathurusinghe.

Meanwhile, earlier of this month Hathurusinghe told said after the change in BCB, if the board wants then he will stay.
