Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, along with 32 other Awami League leaders and activists, have been sued in a murder case related to the killing of college student Tanvir Siddiqui (19) during the quota reform movement in the Bahaddarhat area of Chattogram city.

The case was filed last night at Chandgaon Police Station by Tanvir’s uncle, Mohammad Parvez, naming a total of 34 individuals and 40 to 50 unidentified persons. This is the first case filed against Sheikh Hasina in Chattogram. Zahidul Kabir, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chandgaon Police Station, confirmed the filing.

Tanvir was an HSC examinee of Ashekan Awlia Degree College.

“The case mentions 34 individuals, including the former Prime Minister and the former Education Minister, as accused. Additionally, 40 to 50 unidentified individuals have been included as suspects. Police Inspector (Investigation) Md Sabet Ali has been assigned to investigate the case,” said OC Zahidul Kabir.

According to the case statement, the plaintiff mentioned that his nephew, Tanvir, participated in a “shutdown” program under the banner of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement with other students on July 18 at around 2:30 pm. The students peacefully gathered on the road in front of the Bahaddarhat Kacha Bazar after marching from Muradpur area.

At around 4:20 pm, under the alleged orders of the former Prime Minister and former Education Minister, the remaining accused, along with 40-50 unidentified individuals, armed with deadly weapons including machetes, attacked the students, hurling stones and firing indiscriminately at Tanvir Siddiqui and others. Tanvir and many others were injured in gunfire. He was taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors later declared him dead, the case statement says.
