Hasina, 35 others sued over journo murder

A case was filed on Sunday against 36 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, over the killing of Dhaka Times reporter Mehedi Hasan while covering anti-discrimination student movement in Jatrabari area in the capital.

The other prominent accused in the case are-- Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former law minister Anisul Huq, Workers’ Party chief Rashed Khan Menon, JSD chief Hasanul Huq Inu, former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, former police officials Habibur Rahman, Harun-Ur Rashid and Biplab Kumar Sarker.

Mehedi’s father Mosharraf Hossain filed the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza. After recording statement of the complainant, the court directed Jatrabari Police Station to file the matter as first information report (FIR).

Mehedi Hasan was shot and killed near Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover in Kazla area of Jatrabari on July 18 evening. He was on duty to cover the anti-discrimination student movement in the area.

The slain journalist was the eldest of three brothers and took on the responsibility of caring for his family at a young age. 

With Mehedi gone, his elderly parents are now struggling to comprehend life without their beloved son. 

They are faced with the uncertainty of how they will continue their medical treatments or pay off the loan.
