Haors in Kishoreganj inundated by upstream water

Extreme levels of flood danger were announced in many parts of the Indian state of Meghalaya and Assam in the Indian state of Assam. Water from hill slopes is entering various unions of Itna, Mitamoin, Austagram, Nikli, Bajitpur, Tarail and Karimganj upazilas. Roads, houses and educational institutions have been inundated by the floods. The people of the lowlands and char areas have suffered the most due to the rising flood waters. Millions of people have been flooded.

Many families have left home and taken refuge in boats and high places. There is a shortage of dry food and clean water due to rising water in the houses. The water level in the rivers is still rising. In this situation, people are running in search of shelter.

It is learned that 15 villages in Karimganj and Itna upazilas have been cut off due to rising water level, said Rural Power Distribution Board. There are 10 thousand family in these 15 villages. As soon as the water recedes, the power lines will be restarted. The house of the rice boiler has collapsed in the Meghna River in the upstream of Bhairab. Two boiler workers in the house are missing. The accident took place in Bhairab Bazar Bagan Bari area of the municipal town on Sunday morning. Two workers, Sharif and Mustakim, went missing after boiler house collapsed in the river.

According to the Water Development Board sources, in the last 24 hours, the water level of all the rivers in the district has increased and is flowing over the danger zone. The water level of various rivers flowing over the Haor has risen by three feet in the last 24 hours. If the water level continues to rise, the situation is likely to deteriorate further.

According to district administration sources, the deputy commissioner of Kishoreganj has already visited the flood-hit area. He also exchanged views with the upazila administration and people's representatives on the flood situation. 120 shelters have been opened for the flood victims. The district administration has taken all necessary measures to deal with the flood situation.

Kishoreganj Water Development Board Executive Engineer Matiur Rahman said the trend of increasing water flow in river basins is likely to continue. If the water level continues to rise, the situation is likely to deteriorate further.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Shamim Alam said, "I have observed the flood situation with the upazila administration and people's representatives. Water has infiltrated in many areas. Waterlogged people are being brought to shelters. All kinds of preparations have been made to deal with the floods.”

He said 140 tonnes of GR rice, Tk 2.5 lakh GR cash and 2,000 packets of dry food have already been allocated for flood victims in Kishoreganj district.
