Hakim leads in Shailkupa UZ chairman bi-polls

MA Hakim Ah­med, Awami League nominated boat sym­bolic candidate in the bi polls of Shail­kupa upazila parishad has been leading in race defeating his nearest candidate of pineapple symbol Mustafa Arif Reza Mannu. The bi-election was held on Sunday following the death of its chairman Shefali Khatun.

Although the bi polls was started at 8 in the morning, the presence of the voters was so poor t ill conclusion of the polling centres. Out of the total voters 296,654, least number of voters had cast their votes on the day. 

According to a source related to Election office (EC) said till 7am, MA Hakim Ahmed secured about 50,000 votes, while his nearest candidate Mustafa Arif Reza Mannu got 5,500 votes in 40 centres.

Mention that the position of upazila parishad chairman was vacant when its chairman Shikder Mosharraf Hossain Sona had died of cardiac arrest on November 4 of 2020. His wife Shefali Khatun elected chairman in the vacant position of February 2 of 2021. She also died on May 16 making the chairman position vacant.EC sources said adequate policemen, border guards and Ansar personnel were deployed to avoid any untoward incident following the bi-polls. The election was concluded peacefully.
