Thunder and hailstorms have lashed Ranishankail, Nekmarad, Pirganj and Baliadangi in Thakurgaon. The hailstorm has destroyed maize and chilli plants in the region. Mango and litchi pods have also fallen. Other crops in the district have also been severely damaged.
The hailstorm struck on Sunday from 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm. It caused severe damage to mango, litchi, maize, chilli and other crops.
Faridul Islam, a pepper farmer from Lahiri area of Baliadangi upazila, said that the pepper was to be picked in a few days. But two bighas of land have been washed away by the hailstorm.
Mango orchard trader Khademul Islam said that mango pods and leaves of this three and a half hector orchard had fallen due to the rock-hard hail. The losses of his cannot be imagined. He in the previous hailstorm during the last year also faced losses. Whether he was able to cope or not, the hailstorm let him to be in jeopardy. Abu Hossain, deputy director of the agriculture extension department, said the farmers have suffered a lot due to this hailstorm. Especially pepper, maize, mango, litchi pods and other crops have also been damaged. However, Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officers are working in the field to find out how many hectares of land have been damaged.
