In a bid to close the skill gap between academic learning and industry demands, Coding Shikhbe Bangladesh (CSB) recently organized HackCSB, Bangladesh’s first large-scale international hackathon. The event brought together 600 participants from across the country and the diaspora, providing a platform to address real-world problems through coding.

HackCSB aims to develop practical skills in Bangladesh’s tech sector, where 80% of computer science graduates struggle with basic coding skills. Many companies have had to look abroad for talent, making events like this crucial for nurturing local skills.

Mostofa Adib Shakib, founder of CSB, shared his journey, highlighting the impact of hackathons on his career. Despite graduating from a university with limited hiring prospects, his success in hackathons led to job offers from top companies like Snapchat and Twitter. He emphasized the potential career benefits of these events and their importance in boosting the tech ecosystem.

Participants ranged from students to professionals, creating a dynamic learning environment. Kasfia Mostafa, a computer science student at Brac University, expressed her excitement about gaining new skills and meeting other developers. Professionals like Kazi Habibur Rahaman from Genuine Technology & Research Ltd also contributed to the vibrant atmosphere.

The event featured judges and speakers from global tech giants such as Google, Apple, Meta, Netflix, and Microsoft, exposing participants to international standards. Finalists included seven standout projects from 116 entries, with top honors going to “Planet Prophet,” an AI-based solution for farming; “Grey Matter,” a platform connecting students with researchers; and “MedVisual,” which focuses on transforming healthcare.

Supported by leading universities like BUET and IUT, HackCSB represents a significant step towards realizing the Digital Bangladesh vision, fostering innovation, and positioning Bangladesh as a future tech leader.
