Bangabandhu’s birth centenary

Grand preparation for splendid celebration

Massive preparations are underway centering the celebration of the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Multiple cultural and social programmes have been outlined to mark the special occasion to be held across the country. The main function will, however, be held at the National Parade Square in the capital Dhaka.

The function will be held on March 17 next year. Through the celebration of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu the multi-faced functions will be launched to celebrate the ‘Mujib Year,’ for next one year, till March 17 in 2021. Immediately after the reelection as the general secretary of Bangladesh Awami League for the second time, Obaidul Quader in his post-council press briefing on Saturday said, “Celebration of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu, perfect implementation of the Mujib Borsho from March 17 and the golden jubilee of the independence are the main focuses of the party. Besides, the implementation of the Vission-2021 is another focal point.”

All the ministries and agencies in the government, ruling Bangladesh Awami League, its different wings and front organisations and people from all walks of life are also part in the celebration. According to sources, as part of the programmes, at least 10 prominent artists of the country will be painting of the portraits of Bangabandhu in 10 giant canvases with eight feet width and 24 feet height each. Each of the portraits will elaborate and describe the historic roles of the founder of the Bangladesh and its independence.

Many prominent lyricists remain busy for writing a theme song for the function while another group of prominent artists are busy with the creation of a logo for it. Sources related to the organisers of the function said, apart from honourable President, Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, several hundred delegates from different countries, including diplomats will attend the programme as special guests.

According to sources, the ‘Countdown’ process will be started from January 10, the day of the ‘Home Return, of Bangabandhu in 1972. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the eldest daughter of the founder of Bangladesh, will inaugurate the countdown programme. According to sources, a 102-member committee led by Awami League president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been formed for the celebration of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu. 

Sheikh Rehana, the younger daughter of Bangabandhu, Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, Speaker of the National Parliament, Opposition Leader in the parliament, 10 ministers in the present and immediate past government, several advisors of the Prime Minister, the Mayors of two Dhaka City Corporations, all the chiefs of three forces, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Vice-Chancellors of different universities, represantatives from different religions, several prominent artists of the country, are among the members of the committee.

Besides, another 61-member committee has been formed to implement all the related programmes. The sources also said that for the celebration of the birth centenary and making the Mujib Year successful, eight sub-committees have been formed earlier. One of the committees is working for the purposes of workshops and discussion meetings, one for international communications, one for cultural function and exhibitions, one for publications and literature purposes, one for translations from international publications, one for sports and international tournaments, one for Media and Documentation and the last one for film and documentary purposes.

It should be mentioned that the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born at Tungipara in Gopalganj district on March 17 in 1920. From a student leader, he became a world leader. The Bangladesh has been independent under his leadership. However, unfortunately, he was assassinated along with his family members on August 15 in 1975, only three and a half years after the independence of the country.
