Rivers, canals and reservoirs will be restored to their regular state by evicting illegal occupants without any sort of formal word.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md. Atiqul Islam made the comment while speaking as the chief guest at the Buriganga River Festival organized by "Buriganga River Coalition" and "Water Keepers Bangladesh Consortium" at the Basila Government Primary School playground in Mohammadpur on Saturday.

The DNCC mayor issued a stern warning against illegal occupants, stating that illegal occupants would not be given any legal notice from the city corporation, and would be evicted without any warning. Also, the canal rescue and clean-up activities are being carried out with the help of the people under the initiative of DNCC.

“Most of the unplanned buildings in Dhaka do not have effective septic tanks and soak wells and the overall environment including the water of the reservoir is being polluted due to the untreated sewage falling directly into the drains or canals. In the interest of a healthy environment, modern septic tanks and soak wells should be installed in the houses of the city,” he said.

The mayor further said that 10 pc holding tax would be waived for the owners of all the buildings in the Dhaka North City Corporation area that will have roof gardening.

The DNCC Mayor said Dhaka needs to be developed as an oxygen hub through greening for itself and future generations. Unplanned Dhaka must be transformed into a healthy, vibrant and modern Dhaka through the joint efforts of all. At the beginning of the ceremony, the DNCC Mayor along with the other invited guests announced the auspicious inauguration of the Buriganga River Festival by flying pigeons.
