The University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman, Muhammad Alamgir (Additional Charge) said that the government has taken the initiative to establish universities in the district level for the expansion of higher education.

He said, there are various criticisms regarding the increase in the number of universities and the quality of education. The government has taken the initiative to establish universities in every district to reach the doorstep of the people through the expansion of higher education. If the quality of education is not improved along with the expansion of higher education, students may fall behind in the competition of the global job market.

He said these things in the speech of the chief guest at the knowledge sharing workshop titled 'Formulation and implementation of annual performance agreement action plan: Challenges and transition'. Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) organized a workshop at UGC on Saturday.

Professor Muhammad Alamgir said that the universities of the district should ensure the same quality education and research environment as the first tier universities. For this reason, investment in education should be increased for recruitment of quality teachers, provision of adequate resources and creation of skilled human resources.

The UGC chairman said that the government is working towards the goal of building a smart Bangladesh by 2041. It is difficult to achieve this goal without improving the quality of higher education. To implement the strategic goal of higher education by 2030, it is very important to make the budget allocation to the education sector zero to 6 percent of the total GDP.

UGC Secretary Dr Ferdous Zaman chaired the event and spoke among others, convener of APA and Dean's Council Professor Dr. Sazeda Akhter and Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture Professor Dr. Md. Golam Rabbani.Additional Director of UGC and APA Focal Point Vishnu Mallick was present in the event among others.
