The government is going to stand beside the farmers, who have been affected by the hilly slope water, in the country’s haor (wetland) area.
As part of the government move, the Ministry of Disaster Management and the district authorities of the haor area jointly will compensate the affected farmers with cash incentive and relief materials.
According to sources, crops, mainly the ripened paddy in thousands of acres of land in Sunamganj, Kishoreganj, and Netrokona district have been damaged by the hilly slope water and flash floods. Farmers in Sunamganj district have been affected mainly as ripe paddy in more than 4,000 acres of land in the district has been submerged.
Officials of the Ministry of Disaster Management said crops have been damaged and submerged when many dams become damaged due to accumulated water.
They said that officials of the district administrations have started works to determine the extent of crops damaged by the flash flood and slope water. As soon as this is determined, the government will start providing cash assistance or incentives to the affected farmers.

Meanwhile, the officials said, 1,000 packets of relief materials, including 14 kg of rice, pulses, oil and sugar have already been distributed among the affected farmer families and 1,000 more packets have been sent for distribution.
The government is also taking measures so that no more crops are submerged due to damages of dams in the haor area.
According to the source, the paddy of Sunamganj haor is almost ripe. Farmers were supposed to remain busy in harvesting. But, the reality is now different. They are now busy keeping their paddy safe from the flood water. They are now working day and night voluntarily. Local administration is also providing overall assistance. However, there is uncertainty as to whether the crop will survive. In this situation, about 25,000 farmer families of the district are now worried severely.
Jahangir Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of Sunamganj district said Boro paddy has been cultivated in 2, 22,850 acres of land in the district and crops in 4,000 acres of land have gone under the water.
“We are providing various assistance to the affected farmers with compensation and cash incentives. Besides, various relief materials are also being distributed among them”, the DC said.
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief, Dr. Enamur Rahman said the government has stood with the affected farmers with various support.
“The farmers will be compensated. Apart from relief materials, the farmers will be given cash incentives”, the state minister said.
