The interim government will announce the roadmap of the general elections following the completion of necessary reforms, Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said after a meeting with Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus.

Emerging from the state guest house Jamuna, he said, “We have had a fruitful discussion. We have been informed that the interim government will announce the roadmap of the elections after the necessary reforms.”

Earlier, a three-member delegation including Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Salahuddin Ahmed held over an hour-long meeting with the Chief Adviser who assumed office after the fall of Sheikh Hasina led government amid a mass upsurge.

Planning and education adviser Wahid Uddin Mahmud and law adviser Asif Nazrul were also preset at the meeting.

Mirza Fahrul hoped that the government would bring the country to a stable situation within the quickest possible time.

Responding to a question whether they proposed any date for the polls, he said that they would not propose any date.

“No, we have not proposed any date for the polls. They will announce the date,” he said.

At the meeting, the BNP delegation wanted to know about the economic situation of the country and agreed on the concerns and possibilities that exist in the current situation.

The BNP leaders expressed full support for the actions taken by the interim government and affirmed that this support will continue in the uture.

The BNP along with other political parties have been urging the interim government to declare the road map for the polls to avert any misunderstandings.

The interim government, headed by Dr Yunus, was formed on August 8, just three days after the fall of Sheikh Hasina led government. After the formation of the government, a seven member delegation of the BNP held the first meeting with Dr Yunus on August 12.

There has been a constitutional provision that election must be held within 90 days following the dissolution of parliament.

But the interim government, which is expected to bring some reforms, is yet to fix any date for the elections.

The BNP, which has been out of office since 2007, has been asking the government for a clear message on the issue.

Under that perspective, the BNP held the meeting with the council of advisers.
