The government is taking strict measures to catch the godfathers of corrupt individuals in the financial sector, including money launderers.

“Stern measures are being taken against the big fishes for corruption in financial sector. Action will be visible soon,” Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed told reporters at the Institute of Governance Management at Agargaon in the capital on Saturday.

Dr Salehuddin said bank accounts of many business organisations had already been frozen.

“It is a primary initiative. After that, investigations will be carried out. If found guilty, they will be prosecuted,” he said, adding that these work would be implemented within the quickest possible time.

The National Board of Revenue recently scrapped the opportunity of whitening black money.

When the attention of the finance adviser was drawn to this matter, he said, “The National Board of Revenue will directly take measures against the black money holders. It will catch those who have undisclosed money.”

When asked about the high prices of essential commodities, Dr Salehuddin said the government took a stern stance against the kitchen market manipulators.

“The deputy commissioners (DCs) have been directed to take measures in this regard. We have asked the DCs to take measures after identifying the middlemen responsible for the rise in the prices of commodities,” he said.

“The kitchen market will be monitored on a regular basis. At the same time, the authorities concerned must ensure that growers get the fair prices of their products,” he said.

Hoping that the prices of commodities will come down slowly, Dr Salehuddin said some measures had already been taken. “The duty on onion and potato import has already been cut,” he added.

Over the unrest in the garment industry, the finance adviser said discussions were on with the owners and labourers to address the unrest in the garment industry.

“Apart from this, discussions are underway with different political parties. They all are extending cooperation to improve the situation,” he said.
