James Gunn recently offered an update on his upcoming MCU installment, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,’ and hyped up Peacemaker star Chukwudi Iwuji's role in the film. Gunn's comments come right on the heels of Peacemaker's release, which arrived on HBO Max on January 13. After having directed 2014's ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and its sequel, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,’ Gunn's third installment in the franchise is set to premiere in May 2023 and sees Iwuji in a mysterious leading role.
There's a lot on Gunn's slate when it comes to his upcoming superhero projects, especially within the MCU. His Disney+ special, ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy’ Holiday Special, is currently in the works, and production on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ is well underway. After his DCEU directorial debut with The Suicide Squad premiered last summer, Gunn quickly geared up for the release of his spin-off TV series, Peacemaker, which sees John Cena in the titular role alongside Jennifer Holland (Emilia Harcourt), Danielle Brooks (Leota Adebayo), Iwuji (Clemson Murn), and others.
While speaking with a source, Gunn offered an update on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and hyped up Iwuji's role in the upcoming project. The director explained that people were "freaking out over how good" Iwuji was during shooting and teased that MCU fans might just be in for something unexpected when seeing the film.
With Gunn's recent comments in mind, it's certainly hard to predict what exactly Marvel fans can expect from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’, and from Iwuji in particular. With the 2017 sequel having provided a more tonally serious story compared to its generally lighthearted predecessor, it'll be interesting to see if the third film follows suit, especially when considering where the Guardians left off after the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame’.
